Hey everyone! Got a quick question. I've been growing in a grow bag for about two months now. The bag isn't covered in mycelium but this week mushrooms started to grow. 2 shot up and are quite large and about a dozen more are starting to grow. is this normal? The fact that they are growing without the substrate being covered in mycelium? Should I open the bag for the first time to remove the 2 large mushrooms or just be patient and wait for more to be available? Any help will be greatly appreciated. I hope my picture worked.

Sometimes, contaminated substrates send out fruits as a last ditch attempt to reproduce before they're overcome by other organisms. I'd open that bag up and put her in a water tub or some sort of decent fruiting chamber. I'm guessing you shot spores or a vendor bought lc into a pre made grain bag? This would explain why you're seeing issues.

Why is everyone trying to dog online vendors to bad spores and syringes. I’ve used the same one to success for years. Even the trade to spores here on Shroomery and very few times have gotten bad grain jars. -------------------- Hip, hip... WhoRAy!!! It's not always the jars and it's not always the vendor bought bags. But once combined there's no way for us to help troubleshoot. Was the bag not prepped well? We don't know. Was the syringe maybe dirty? We don't know. Maybe a combination of both? Again we don't know. Where as if people explain there process in detail from making there own stuff we can generally help better. We're not so much dogging the vendors but it doesn't allow us to help to often. FAQs
Start with a grow kit
What are the steps to start mushroom farming? ›
The six steps are Phase I composting, Phase II composting, spawning, casing, pinning, and cropping. These steps are described in their naturally occurring sequence, emphasizing the salient features within each step. Compost provides nutrients needed for mushrooms to grow.
What is the first stage in mushroom cultivation? ›
In the first step, the compost is prepared by mixing paddy straw with organic materials like cow dung and also inorganic fertilizers. Spawn is the seed of mushroom. It is prepared by growing fungal mycelium in grains under sterile conditions. Spawn is sown on compost.
How do you make a mushroom starter culture? ›
What is the step-by-step guide to making liquid culture? Start by dissolving sugar in water, then sterilize the solution in a pressure cooker. After cooling, inoculate with mushroom mycelium using sterile technique. Agitate the mixture regularly and incubate at a consistent temperature in the dark.
Is mushroom farming difficult? ›
It can be overwhelming at first, but starting a mushroom farm is fairly simple. There are two options for starting your mushroom farm: indoor or outdoor. Indoor mushroom farming is the best option for serious year-round production.
How much money do you need to start a mushroom farm? ›
The cost can range from $3,000 to $100,000, depending upon how advanced you plan to make your farm.
How long does it take to cultivate mushroom? ›
Mushrooms are harvested by hand throughout a 16-35 day cycle.
How long after inoculation should I see mycelium? ›
Colonization occurs after inoculation. This is when the mycelium will start to take over the grain that was inoculated with spores. This period usually lasts between 3 to 6 weeks depending on strain and environmental conditions.
How to speed up mycelium growth? ›
The higher the inoculation rate or amount of spawn added to the substrate, the faster the mycelium will grow through the substrate. The substrate likely will not produce a larger amount of mushrooms, so a high inoculation rate means more money spent on spawn per pound of mushrooms.
How long from pinning to fruiting? ›
How Long from Pinning to Fruiting. Once pins have formed, the duration from pinning to fruiting typically ranges from 5 to 12 days, depending on the mushroom species and growing conditions. Maintaining optimal environmental factors during this period is essential for healthy fruiting body development.
Certain tools will come in handy while growing mushrooms whether you're working at home or with commercial mushroom growing equipment. Things like tub liners, spray bottles, alcohol wipes, and more are all small but necessary tools to keep in plentiful supply. Hygrometer & Temperature Gauges.
What is mushroom starter called? ›
Mycelium, or actively growing mushroom culture, is placed on a substrate—usually sterilized grains such as rye or millet—and induced to grow into those grains. This is called inoculation. Inoculated grains (or plugs) are referred to as spawn.
What is the easiest mushroom to grow? ›
Pretty much every mushroom growing resource I could find says that oyster mushrooms are the easiest variety for first time-growers, as they grow fast and can easily thrive in substrates made of things like coffee grounds and straw, making them relatively low maintenance.
What is the easiest mushroom to sell? ›
Shiitake and oyster mushrooms are the best choice for small-scale production, since they don't require a lot of equipment and space. Shiitake mushrooms are often sold in grocery stores, health food stores, and farmers' markets and are also quite popular for their flavor and consistency.
How much money can a small mushroom farm make? ›
For instance, a mushroom farm growing 12,000 pounds of gourmet mushrooms sold to wholesale clients can expect to bring in between $70,000 and $96,000 each year. But it's possible to scale this up, of course.
How much space do you need for a mushroom farm? ›
Mushrooms are an amazing crop, in that you can realistically churn out about 50kg (110lb) per week, from an area the size of about 8-10 square meters (90 square feet). This coupled with the fact that they demand very minimal water input, means you can grow a significant amount of mushrooms in a very very small space.
Can you build a mushroom farm? ›
Mushroom farming is a unique form of agriculture that requires specific growing conditions and techniques. Mushrooms are grown in a controlled environment, typically in a dark and humid space, similar to growing cannabis. The growing medium for mushrooms can vary, but common options include straw or soil compost.
