Hi, guys!
I'd ask you something about usage of word "happen" in below sentence.

(In the office)
A: Hi, friend. Do you happen to have the codes for the new online system?
B: Do you mean the ones we need to report how many hours we have worked each week?

In this situation, why does A use the word "happen" ?

I thought it made sense the sentence without "happen", and I couldn't understand why was the word "happen" used.
Or, was there any particular meaning in it?

I hope you'll help me to understand..
Thank you for your help in advance Do you happen to have...? (1)

Literally "happen to" means "by chance". So literally "you happen to have" means "you have, by luck".

Figuratively we use this "by chance/by luck" phrase as a way to soften a request (make it more polite). Here "do you have" is a "give me" request. Adding the "happen" part just makes it weaker, more polite.

Yes, it does make sensen without "happen". Saying "do you have the codes?" is fine. That's still more polite than "Give me the codes."

Yes, it makes perfect sense without "happen" - "Do you have the codes...?".

Do you happen to have...? can be rephrased as Is there any possibility that you have...? or Do you have the codes for the new system by any chance?

It's kind of like saying, "I know it's not your responsibility to give me that information but do you have that information?"

It's a way to show the other person you know they are doing you a favor and saving you time if they have that information (and you don't want them to feel bad about it if they don't).

Since it makes your sentence sound more polite can I say:
"Do you guys happen to have a rooftop swimming pool in this hotel?"

And when using it to mean 'by chance,' which one between the following sentences is more natural:
    1) I went to pick up some groceries and happened to see James in town.
    2) I went to pick up some groceries and saw James in town.

Also is it the same as saying 'by any chance'? For example, "Do have this design by any chance?"

Yes, that is the same. That is a polite version of "Do you have this design?"

Yes. But that might be too polite. Adding a swimming pool takes a lot of work. So "happen to" or "by chance" sounds a bit silly.

But asking whether a shop has a particular design, or a particular fabric, or a particular size -- that could be "by chance".
You don't happen to have this dress in women's size large?
Is there any chance you have this fabric in green?

    They are both natural.

Sentence (1) says it happened by chance ("happened to see"). Sentence (2) doesn't say that, but it seems likely because sentence (2) says nothing about planning or expecting to see James. You might say that with (3):

    3) I went to pick up some groceries and to see James.

    Thank you for the answer.

I've heard this structure. It's always made my wonder what the difference between "Do you happen to have this dress in....?" and "You don't happen to have this dress in......?" is?

I think we also add 'do you' after "You don't happen to have this dress in......? Do you?"

'by any chance' suggests that the speaker believes that there is a substantial probability that the answer will be "No". "Do you happen to have . . .?" and "Do you by chance have . . .?" also suggest that "No" is a possible, even probable, answer.
